Julia Schmidt achieved her Dipl.-Ing. degree in media technology with an emphasis on digital media from the Technical University of Ilmenau, Thüringen, in 2010. Her diploma thesis dealt with image segmentation for 3D video conferencing systems.

Since 2010, she is working towards her PhD degree at Institut für Informationsverarbeitung (TNT), Leibniz Universität Hannover. Her main research activity focuses on video coding and streaming.
