Jan Voges studied electrical engineering at Leibniz Universität Hannover with specialization on communications engineering and received his Dipl.-Ing. degree in 2015. In his diploma thesis "Genome Compression" he developed novel approaches for the compression of genomic information data generated by high-throughput sequencing machines. After graduating he joined Institut für Informationsverarbeitung at Leibniz Universität Hannover where he currently works as a research assistant towards his PhD.

He is an active contributor to ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 11, known as Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), where he works with the Ad-Hoc Group (AHG) on Genomic Information Representation.

Furthermore, he was appointed the DIN (German national organization for standardization) project leader for the development of Part 2 (ISO/IEC 23092-2) of the upcoming standard on Genomic Information Representation which is also known as MPEG-G.

His research interests include: Data Compression, Bioinformatics, Information Theory, Signal Processing.
